Musical Theatre Course (adults)

This extensive Musical Theatre Course has been especially designed for all performers who wish to achieve outstanding standards in the three core disciplines of Acting, Singing and Dance. Delivered only by professionals currently working in the industry, our unique goal is to give our students the best theoretical knowledge and practical skills to make a stable career in the Musical Theatre industry.

Developed over 40 years of career and research by award-winning director Loic Valmy, our Musical Theatre program provides students with the theoretical knowledge, practical training and physical skills they’ll need to become professionals in the industry and insure a sustainable career.

As performers, students are trained with the best Acting and Vocal Methods including Stanislavski, Strasberg, Adler and Alexander.
This course run over 4 terms per year and provides you with more than 400 hours of intensive and professional training.

Terms 1 to 3 – Theoretical and Practical training
Term 4 is entirely dedicated to the preparation and rehearsal of the end of the year showcase.

Acting

2 hours per week


  • Introduction to Stanislavski, Meisner, Strasberg, Alexander and Adler
  • What is Acting? Is ACTING faking?
  • Characterisation (background and justification) and Scenography
  • Study of Human emotions and expressions (Psychology)
  • Study of Human Communication principles
  • Breaking down your text (Monologue, Dialogue, Phrasing, Emphasis and Intent)
  • Acting is about the “why”, not the “how”
  • Creative expression and reactive emotions
  • Improvisation and Scenes work
  • Physical Expressions & Action Theatre
  • Build-up your Stage presence
  • Diction and Articulation
  • Work on Sense memory and Justification
  • Risk taking, become a bold actor

Vocal Training

2 hour a week, including ½ hour of private singing lesson per student


  • Diaphragmatic breathing,
  • Vocal Placement, Tune, Vocal development
  • Diction and Articulation
  • Master the 5 main vocal registers (Chest, Throat, White, Head voice and Belt)
  • Ensemble technique (Registers and Harmonies)
  • Range Extension
  • Contemporary & Classical Vocal Practice
  • Vocal nuances and effects
  • Increase your vocal self-confidence

Musical Theatre

2 hours a week


  • Theatrical Interpretation
  • Song Analysis ‘Break down’ (Music, Lyrics, Keywords, Stresses and Vocals)
  • Characterisation in songs
  • Interpretation & Natural Phrasing
  • Vocal nuances and effects
  • Prepare for Auditions (Song choice, presentation, attitude)

Music Theory

  • Melodic Theory (Scales, Intervals,…)
  • Rhythmic Theory (Key Signatures, the different rhythms used in Musical Theatre)
  • Chords and Harmonies structure
  • Sight Singing

Physical Expression & Action Theatre

1.5 Hour a week


  • Based on Ruth Zaporah’s studies and work
  • Connect the performer’s mind and body
  • Learn to work with your space and body
  • Expand individual expressive range and ensemble perception
  • Play with abandon
  • Elevate vocal, verbal, and physical performance artistry
  • Technical work on the “moment-to-moment” action

Dance (Broadway Jazz)

1.5 Hours a week


  • Fundamentals of dance including postural alignment, safe dance practices & correct muscle engagement
  • Movement Performance and Vocabulary

  • Advanced Dance Technique
  • Dance Partnering & Ensemble

Masterclasses & Showcase


Masterclasses:

Once a month, we receive professionals from the industry, producers, directors, choreographers, professional performers and agents to come and share their experience with our students.

Showcase:

At the end of the year (term 4), students have the opportunity to show their progresses and talent during a public showcase in a venue of Brisbane.

In the frame of our partnership with Celestia, Celestia offers a 1 year contract to all LVBA graduating students (Musical Theatre Professional Training Term 4).

Alchemy ProductionS offers professional and semi-professional contracts to their performers for all their productions in Brisbane and SE Queensland. In the frame of our partnership, LVBA students have a direct and ‘early bird’ access to Alchemy Productions auditions and casts.

Admission Criteria

Admission upon AUDITION ONLY for all Musical Theatre courses

Applicants must be over 16. Moderate previous training in at least 1 of the 3 core Disciplines (Acting, Singing or Dance) is recommeded but not compulsory.
Music theory knowledge NOT REQUIRED.

Audition Process:

Depending on the course you are applying for, you will be required to:
ACTING: Prepare 2 monologues from 2 contrasting repertoires
SINGING: Prepare 2 contrasting songs from the Musical Theatre repertoire
DANCING: Participate to 1 dance group audition with one of our choreographers
